Eighth grade for H has been a bit of a planning challenge this year. She attempted to use Alpha Omega’s online program last year. Although at first she really loved it, it didn’t take terribly long to realize it wasn’t a good fit for her. All of the subjects other than math were scrapped fairly early in the year. Math ended up not working so well, either, by the end of the year. So, for this year, it was almost like going back to the beginning to reassess what would work best with her learning style.

Math

Originally, we had discussed going back to Math U See for pre-algebra. But then I decided to look into Life of Fred. I have always heard such good things about it. Since she loves to read, I decided to try it with her this year. I’m really excited to see how this one pans out for her this year. I think she will really enjoy the humor that seems to be spread throughout the book.

Language Arts

Grammar

She’s currently working on Analytical Grammar with her sister. We started the first 10-week season during the summer so they can get it done with earlier in the year. That way, they can both concentrate on their other subjects more.

Literature

For literature, I’ve decided to revisit a program that I used with the girls when they were younger: Moving Beyond the Page. For right now, we’re for sure going to do The People of Sparks, an Independent Study unit, and Newton at the Center. I’m also going to add in a few more, but I’m still researching what I want to use.

Writing

In addition to the writing that is included in Moving Beyond the Page, I’m also going to be using Writing Strands and some IEW with her. Writing is not in any way her favorite, so I’m hoping that by mixing it up, I can keep her engaged enough to make some nice improvements this year.

History

Originally, I was just going to choose a couple of the Moving Beyond the Page language arts units for her. Then I saw that one of the history units uses the same book as one of the lit units I had chosen. After flipping through the book, I decided to add the history unit as well. The book is called The Story of Science: Newton at the Center. I’m going to go through all of the literature units as we do them and add any of the associated history units that look interesting. In addition, we’re going to use a little bit of TRISMS material and find some fun lap books to make.

Science

We’re going to continue on with the logic stage science from Elemental Science this year. She’ll be doing Earth Science and Astronomy for the Logic Stage. It has proven to be a great program at the logic stage level.

So, this is what I’ve chosen as the backbone for H’s 8th grade homeschool plan. Have you used any of the materials I’ve included? If so, please share your opinion.
